CVS, Walgreens to Sell Cannabidiol Products Over the Counter
Major pharmacy chains CVS and Walgreens have announced plans to sell products containing cannabidiol (CBD) over the counter in select stores in the United States. This move follows the recent passage of the U.S. Farm Bill, which legalized hemp, a key source of CBD, at the federal level.
CBD, a non-psychoactive compound found in cannabis plants, has been touted for its potential health benefits including pain relief, reducing anxiety and depression, and improving sleep. While the Food and Drug Administration has yet to approve CBD as a dietary supplement or medicine, many products containing CBD have flooded the market.
CVS and Walgreens are not the first retailers to consider selling CBD products in their stores, but their move signifies a major shift towards mainstream acceptance of the compound. However, not all states have legalized the use of CBD, and the rules and regulations surrounding it are still evolving.
As the popularity of CBD continues to grow, it remains to be seen how the market will develop and how regulators will respond to this trend. But for now, consumers can find CBD products more easily accessible than ever before at their local CVS or Walgreens.
What is Cannabidiol?
Definition
Cannabidiol, or CBD, is a chemical compound found in cannabis plants. It belongs to a group of compounds known as cannabinoids.
Effects
Unlike tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), another well-known cannabinoid, CBD does not produce psychoactive effects when consumed. This means it does not produce a “high” like THC does.
Research suggests that CBD may have several health benefits, including pain relief, anti-inflammatory effects, and even the potential to reduce anxiety.
Legal Status
The legal status of CBD varies by country and even state within the United States. In some places, it is legal to use for medical purposes with a prescription, while in others it is fully legal for both medical and recreational use.
Recently, the US government legalized industrial hemp, which is a form of cannabis that contains CBD but very little THC. This has led to an increase in the availability of CBD products in stores across the country, including at CVS and Walgreens.
Conclusion
Overall, CBD is a non-psychoactive compound found in cannabis that has potential health benefits. Its legal status is complex and varies widely, but it is becoming more readily available in a variety of forms for those interested in trying it for themselves.
The Legality of Cannabidiol
Federal Law and Cannabidiol
Cannabidiol, also known as CBD, is a non-psychoactive compound found in cannabis plants. While marijuana remains illegal at the federal level, cannabidiol derived from hemp is legal under federal law. The 2018 Farm Bill removed hemp from the list of controlled substances, making it legal to grow and manufacture hemp-derived CBD products.
State Laws and Cannabidiol
Even though hemp-derived CBD is legal under federal law, the legality of CBD varies from state to state. Some states have legalized both medical and recreational use of marijuana, while others have only legalized medical use. In some states, CBD is only legal for medical use, while in others, it is legal for both medical and recreational use.
It is important to note that state laws regarding CBD are constantly changing, so it is important to stay up-to-date before purchasing or using CBD products.
CBD and Drug Testing
While hemp-derived CBD contains only trace amounts of THC, the psychoactive component of marijuana, it is possible for CBD products to contain enough THC to result in a positive drug test. It is important for individuals who are subject to drug testing to be aware of this potential risk and to choose products from reputable sources that provide third-party lab testing results.
Why are CVS and Walgreens Selling Cannabidiol Products?
Rising Demand for Cannabidiol Products
Cannabidiol (CBD) has gained popularity for its potential health benefits, including reducing anxiety, alleviating pain and inflammation, and improving sleep quality. As a result, there is a growing demand for products containing CBD.
Legalization of Industrial Hemp and CBD Products
The 2018 Farm Bill legalized the production of industrial hemp, which is a source of CBD. This has opened up an opportunity for retailers to sell CBD products legally in states where they are allowed.
Expanding Product Offerings
CVS and Walgreens are looking to expand their product offerings and cater to changing consumer preferences. Selling CBD products is a way to attract new customers and capitalize on the growing market.
Increased Competition
Other retailers, including online retailers and health food stores, are already selling CBD products. CVS and Walgreens may be getting into the game to stay competitive and not lose out on potential sales.
Meeting Customer Needs
Many customers are turning to natural and alternative products for their health needs, and CBD fits into this category. By offering CBD products, CVS and Walgreens are meeting the needs of their customers and providing them with a wider range of options.
The Benefits of Cannabidiol
Relief from Pain and Inflammation
Cannabidiol (CBD) has been shown to have analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties, making it a promising natural remedy for pain management. It interacts with the body’s endocannabinoid system to regulate pain sensations and reduce inflammation.
Reduction of Anxiety and Depression
CBD has been found to have anxiolytic and antidepressant effects, helping to alleviate symptoms of anxiety and depression. It interacts with serotonin receptors in the body to regulate mood and reduce feelings of anxiety.
Treatment for Epilepsy and Seizure Disorders
CBD has been shown to have anticonvulsant properties and may be effective in treating epilepsy and seizure disorders. It has been approved by the FDA as a treatment for two rare forms of epilepsy.
Management of Neurological Conditions
CBD may be useful in managing neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis. It has been found to have neuroprotective properties and may help slow the progression of these conditions.
Relief from Symptoms of Cancer Treatment
CBD may help alleviate symptoms of cancer treatment, including nausea and vomiting, pain, and loss of appetite. It has been found to have antiemetic, analgesic, and appetite-stimulating effects.
Other Potential Benefits
While more research is needed, CBD may have potential benefits for a variety of other conditions, including acne, high blood pressure, and substance abuse disorders. Its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties may also have general health benefits.

They are intended to provide a healthier alternative to pharmacological interventions for those who suffer from anxiety, stress, or insomnia.

Last but not least, CVS offers CBD nasal sprays. These sprays are designed to provide rapid relief for headaches and migraines, as well as to alleviate nasal congestion and other sinuses-related discomforts.
What are the Risks and Side Effects of Cannabidiol?
1. Interaction with other medications
One of the biggest concerns with using cannabidiol (CBD) products is the potential interaction with other medications that you may be taking. CBD can inhibit the activity of certain enzymes in the liver, which can affect how other drugs are metabolized. This may result in either increased or decreased levels of these drugs in your body.
2. Adverse reactions
While CBD is generally considered safe, some people may experience adverse reactions, such as dry mouth, diarrhea, dizziness, and fatigue. These side effects are typically mild and go away on their own, but if they persist or become more severe, you should stop using CBD and consult with a healthcare professional.
3. Lack of regulation
Another risk associated with using CBD products is the lack of regulation in the industry. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has only approved one CBD medication for the treatment of epilepsy, and there are currently no regulations in place to ensure the safety, potency, or efficacy of other CBD products. This means that some products may contain impurities or inaccurate labeling, which can pose a health risk to consumers.
4. Prenatal risks
While there is not enough research to determine the effects of CBD use during pregnancy, some studies have suggested that it may have negative effects on fetal development. Therefore, pregnant women should avoid using any CBD products without first consulting with a healthcare professional.
5. Addiction potential
While CBD itself is not addictive, some products may contain trace amounts of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive compound found in marijuana. THC can be addictive, and prolonged use may lead to dependence. Therefore, it is important to carefully read the label and choose third-party tested products that contain no or very low levels of THC.
- Conclusion: While CBD has shown promise in treating various health conditions, it is important to be aware of the potential risks and side effects associated with its use. Always consult with a healthcare professional before using any CBD products, especially if you are taking other medications or have any underlying health conditions.
How to Use Cannabidiol Products?
1. Know the Cannabidiol Dose
Before using any cannabidiol products, it’s essential to know the right dose. The proper dose may vary depending on various factors, such as weight, medical condition, and the type of product you’re using. Start with a low dose and gradually increase it until you reach the desired effect.
2. Choose the Right Product
There are different cannabidiol products available in the market, such as oils, topicals, capsules, edibles, and more. Choose the right product based on your needs and preferences. For example, if you’re looking for fast relief for localized pain, topicals might be the best option.
3. Read the Label
It’s crucial to read the label of any cannabidiol product you’re considering using. Check the ingredients, potency, and recommended dosage. Also, make sure it’s free from harmful additives or contaminants.
4. Undergo a Patch Test
Before using any cannabidiol topical product, undergo a patch test. Apply a small amount of the cream or lotion on a small area of your skin and wait for 24 hours to see if there’s any adverse reaction. If there’s none, you can use it safely.
5. Monitor the Effects
After using any cannabidiol product, monitor its effects on your body. Observe any changes, such as pain relief, improvement in sleep, or any adverse reactions. If you experience any harmful side effects, discontinue use and consult your healthcare provider.
6. Store Properly
Store cannabidiol products in a cool, dry place, away from sunlight and heat. Keep them out of reach of children and pets. Proper storage can ensure the longevity and safety of the product.
Can Cannabidiol Products be Used for Children and Pets?
Children:
While there is anecdotal evidence that cannabidiol (CBD) products can be helpful for children with certain conditions, it is important to consult with a pediatrician before administering any CBD products to a child.
Studies have shown that CBD can improve symptoms of epilepsy in children, but it is important to note that CBD may interact with other medications and can cause side effects such as fatigue and changes in appetite.
It is also important to note that the safety and efficacy of CBD products for children have not been extensively studied, so a pediatrician can help weigh the potential benefits and risks.
Pets:
Many pet owners have used CBD products to aid in managing their pets’ anxiety, pain, and other medical conditions. However, it is important to consult with a veterinarian before giving any CBD products to a pet.
CBD products for pets should be specifically formulated for animals and should not contain any THC. THC can be toxic to pets and can cause adverse side effects.
It is also important to note that the safety and efficacy of CBD products for pets have not been extensively studied, so a veterinarian can help determine the appropriate dosage and monitor for any potential side effects.
Lastly, it is crucial to only purchase CBD products from reputable sources that provide third-party testing results to ensure the product is safe and accurately labeled.

The Concerns of Some Consumers
While most consumers have welcomed the availability of CBD products at CVS and Walgreens, others have raised concerns about the quality and safety of these products. Some have worried that by entering the CBD market, these retailers may be diluting the effectiveness of their products to make them more appealing to a wider audience.
Others have expressed concern over the lack of regulation of CBD products, and fear that consumers may be deceived by false advertising or poor quality products. They believe that without proper regulation, retailers like CVS and Walgreens could be putting their customers at risk by selling products that do not meet high quality standards.
Concerns of Some Consumers | Counterarguments |
---|---|
CBD products may be less effective if diluted by mainstream retailers. | The quality and concentration of CBD products sold at CVS and Walgreens are still ensured through federally-mandated manufacturing standards. |
CBD products are not properly regulated, and could be dangerous if not manufactured correctly. | CVS and Walgreens have strict quality control measures in place, and only sell products from reputable, trusted manufacturers. |
Overall, however, the majority of consumers have responded positively to the news that they can now purchase CBD products at CVS and Walgreens. These retailers have opened up a new market for CBD products that was previously limited to specialty stores and online retailers, which is great news for both consumers and the cannabis industry in general.

CBD Industry Growth
The market for cannabidiol products is rapidly expanding in the United States. According to a report by Grand View Research, the CBD market is predicted to reach USD 9.69 billion by 2025. This growth can be attributed to the increasing acceptance of hemp-derived CBD products and the legalization of hemp farming in the 2018 Farm Bill.
Government Regulation
While hemp-derived CBD products are legal, the FDA has yet to establish clear regulations for the manufacturing and sale of these products. This lack of regulation has led to inconsistencies in product quality and labeling. However, the FDA has recently held hearings to explore potential regulatory frameworks for CBD products, indicating that regulations may be forthcoming.
Retail Market Expansion
The recent announcement that CVS and Walgreens will sell CBD products over the counter is a significant development for the CBD industry. This move by two major retail chains will increase access to CBD products for consumers, potentially leading to further market growth. Other retailers, such as Kroger and Vitamin Shoppe, have also expressed interest in carrying CBD products.
